In2014,directorRichardLinklaterreleasedBoyhood,afictionalcoming-of-agesagathatwasfilmedusingthesamecastacrosstwelveyears.Thisfilmmirrorsthatconcept:creatingareal-lifeepicofboyhoodandmanhoodthatfollowsthesameindividualover20years,livinginoneofthemostdangerouscountriesintheworld.WhenwefirstmeetMir,heisamischievousboyofsevenlivinginacaveincentralAfghanistanalongsidetheBuddhasofBamiyan,twostatuesthatwererecentlydestroyed.Fortwodecades,thefilmfollowstheadventuresofhislife,until,asanadultwithafamilyofhisown,hedecidestopursuehisowncareerasanewscameramaninKabul.Morethanjustapersonaljourney,MyChildhood,MyCountryisanpowerfulexaminationofwhathas–andhasnot–beenachievedinAfghanistanoverthepast20years.
